Nillionaire
EtymologyFrom nil, and the rest of the family.
A blend of nil — from Latin nihil, “nothing” — with the -aire of millionaire, which English borrowed from the French millionnaire in the early nineteenth century, when having a million of anything was still remarkable.
The suffix has been productive ever since. English speakers built billionaire, then thousandaire and hundredaire as jokes at their own expense. Nillionaire is where that joke ends: the same grand suffix, attached to nothing at all.
Pronunciation
/ˈnɪl.jə.neər/ — three syllables, the first stressed. The null pronunciation is also heard and nobody is correcting anyone.
Part of speech
Noun, countable. Also used attributively: nillionaire energy, nillionaire club, nillionaire lifestyle.
The scaleWhere the word sits.
Every other rung on this ladder was invented by someone who had the money. Only one of them was invented by the people who did not.
